Step Afrika! presents Drumfolk

Boni Belle Brooks Series
Brooks Center for the Performing Arts
Thursday, Sep 22, 2022 at 7:30 PM (ET)

Sponsored by Clemson University Division of Inclusion and Equity

Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, traditional African dances and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience. The company will bring their production, "Drumfolk," to the Brooks Center. Inspired by the Stono Rebellion of 1739, "Drumfolk" explores this little-known event in U.S. and South Carolina history that would forever transform African American life and culture. When Africans lost the right to use their drums, the beats found their way into the body of the people — the Drumfolk. New percussive forms took root leading to the development of some of our country’s most distinct performance traditions like ring shout, tap and stepping.

Join us for a discussion with the company following the performance sponsored by the Department of Global Black Studies.

The presentation of Drumfolk was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts' National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Mellon Foundation.
